Not everyone is permitted equal access to the world of the masks. Walu was described to me by Dogon elders as the “masked police” — guardian of the masks, where they are kept and the knowledge surrounding them. During the dama, the ceremonies surrounding death, and the Sigui, the great generational celebration held approximately once every sixty years, Walu ensures that those outside the initiated world do not approach too closely. The masks belong to the Awa and have their own sacred language, sigi so, understood by those initiated into the masked society. Access to this world is carefully prescribed by initiation, age and ceremonial status. Most women and children remain outside the masked society, while women born during the year of the Sigui occupy the exceptional status of yasigine, giving them a privileged relationship with the masks and ceremonies ordinarily reserved for the initiated.

Exhibition Editions and Artist’s Proofs are produced to a fixed size and specification.

ARCHITECTURAL PRINTS
Selected photographs from the collection may also be commissioned as Architectural Prints, custom-produced for residential, commercial, hospitality and interior installations.
Created specifically for the space in which they will be seen, Architectural Prints can be produced in custom dimensions and a range of contemporary presentation formats, including Diasec, acrylic and aluminium mounting.
In these formats, the photographic image becomes an integral part of the finished piece, permanently bonded to its presentation and intended to remain as such.
Architectural Prints are unsigned and unnumbered and exist entirely outside the limited Exhibition Editions and Artist’s Proofs.
Please enquire to discuss dimensions, presentation and pricing.
