At close to fifteen feet in length, Sirige is among the most extraordinary masks I encountered anywhere in Africa. Its immense height represents the connection between the people on earth and the ancestral world above — the mask itself forming a bridge between the two. Eight openings rise along its length, each representing one of the eight founding ancestors from whom the Dogon trace their descent; stacked one above another, they form an ancestral lineage reaching towards the sky. The entire structure is controlled through a wooden mouthpiece gripped between the performer’s teeth, demanding extraordinary strength as it is lowered towards the earth and raised again. During the dance, two Sirige may confront one another, their immense masks sweeping across the ground in a stylised contest. With every movement, the mask travels between earth and sky, bringing the ancestral world symbolically into contact with the living below.

ARCHITECTURAL PRINTS
Selected photographs from the collection may also be commissioned as Architectural Prints, custom-produced for residential, commercial, hospitality and interior installations.
Created specifically for the space in which they will be seen, Architectural Prints can be produced in custom dimensions and a range of contemporary presentation formats, including Diasec, acrylic and aluminium mounting.
In these formats, the photographic image becomes an integral part of the finished piece, permanently bonded to its presentation and intended to remain as such.
Architectural Prints are unsigned and unnumbered and exist entirely outside the limited Exhibition Editions and Artist’s Proofs.
