Nalary had two sons serving as lmurran. I was told that the paired ornaments hanging beside her ears marked those two warrior sons — part of a wider Samburu tradition in which cowrie shells, sikira, can be used to record the men of an age-set. When I asked her age, our interpreter explained that many older Samburu do not measure their lives by birthdays and calendar years in the way we do. He estimated that Nalary was somewhere in her late thirties or early forties — considerably younger than I had imagined. Look more closely, however, and the estimate becomes less surprising: beneath the layers of ochre and beadwork, the skin of her neck appears remarkably smooth compared with the more exposed skin of her face, a striking illustration of a life lived beneath the equatorial sun. At the end of the portrait I handed her the print. She studied it quietly against the Land Rover, then looked up with a smile and said: “I look beautiful.”

In these formats, the photographic image becomes an integral part of the finished piece, permanently bonded to its presentation and intended to remain as such.
Architectural Prints are unsigned and unnumbered and exist entirely outside the limited Exhibition Editions and Artist’s Proofs.
